IndyCar isn't sure when it can get its cars on track to officially start the season. IndyCar's first iRacing event will be Saturday with a 25-car field. Formula One drivers will join video gamers in a series of virtual grands prix to replace races postponed by the coronavirus outbreak, the sport announced on Friday. The first, run on the official F1 2019 PC video game, will be held from 2000GMT on Sunday when fans should have been tuning in on television to the Bahrain Grand Prix. The virtual race will be over 28 laps, half the usual distance of the real one under the Sakhir floodlights.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Busch and other NASCAR drivers have signed on to race in an exhibition esports series while their cars are kept off the tracks amid the novel coronavirus pandemic. NASCAR and iRacing announced the formation of the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational Series on Tuesday night, trying to give fans alternative viewing with the NASCAR season on hold until at least May 3. The multi-week series will start Sunday with a virtual competition at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

NASCAR and IndyCar reversed course Friday and pulled the plug on racing this weekend, with IndyCar also suspending its season through the end of April due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. NASCAR called off Sunday's race at Atlanta Motor Speedway and next weekend's events at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The Bahrain and Vietnam Grand Prix races were postponed Friday because of the coronavirus outbreak, the third and fourth races of the Formula One season to be called off. Bahrain was scheduled for next week — at an empty track — and the inaugural Vietnamese GP in Hanoi on April 5. Governing body FIA said in a statement that it will consider “the viability of potential alternative dates" later this year for Bahrain and Vietnam “should the situation improve.”

IndyCar pushed forward with Sunday's season-opening race after the mayor of St. Petersburg said Thursday fans would not be permitted to attend. Only essential personnel can enter the fenced area surrounding the temporary street course through downtown St. Petersburg.
